BODHAINE RANCH
July 23, 2007
Dear Friends of Bodhaine Ranch,
Lots of good news this year! All your favorite fruits and varieties will be in abundant
supply this year.
Though winter precipitation was lower than normal, the water came at the right time
to assure well leafed-out trees; a necessity for optimal fruit development and
protection from our intense sunlight. There was light hail damage to some crops or
varieties, but the freezing temperatures of spring missed damaging or destroying
our crops as has been the case for the previous three years.
The good spring weather has allowed many projects to move forward, some of which
you will hear more about in future.
Our bakeshop is pleased to announce it has modified some menu and ingredient items
in order to offer health-conscious choices for you. Chief among these will be piecrust
without trans-fats and a line of sugar-free pie fillings. All pies will have zero trans-
fats except for those having certain toppings. We have been diligent in selecting
ingredients that retain our traditional quality flavor and characteristics that you
appreciate.
We are also asking you to help us determine if you would be interested in having our
baked goods available after the traditional Apple Hill season at some central location
in your area? The mechanics of this survey have not been fully worked out, but stay
in touch with our web site, www.bodhaineranch.com for further developments and
ways in which you can help us work out a plan that meets your needs.
Our Apple Hill Organics Farm Market it has been slower getting off the starting line
this year than we had planned. Increased popularity of locally-grown produce
necessitated expansion of member vegetable plantations by 50% at one farm and
100% at another. Weather and equipment or labor availability affected completion of
infrastructure installation and field preparation for planting. Goodness Orchard, for
one, had trade rats invade their greenhouse and eat over 20 flats of transplants in
April and had to start over from seed again.
Our market will open for the summer on weekends July 28 with a greater variety of
your favorite vegetables and fruit. Consult Bodhaine Ranch website for details on
days and hours the market will be open and produce currently available.
Sacramento Municipal Utility District is seeking regulatory approval and its Board of
Directors will be voting to approve a project that has potential to negatively affect
your Apple Hill visits for a period of up to five years. The project, named “Iowa Hill”,
will involve hollowing out a knoll on the American River canyon at the end of Cable
Road to impound water pumped from the river at night and then sluiced down the
canyon-side through a generator for purposes of selling energy on the power grid.
Currently, the only access to the construction site for all equipment, workers and
materials is on the roadways of Apple Hill. SMUD’s own projection indicates more
than 200 vehicle transits twice daily plus deliveries and removal of heavy equipment,
supplies and movement of materials related to the project.
These Apple Hill roads are our school bus routes and unsuitable for the proposed
heavy usage. Another matter of significant concern for those of us who live and work
here is SMUD’s apparent unwillingness to accept responsibility for any damage from
wildfire caused by construction. The canyon is regarded by CDF and the Forest
Service as high risk for catastrophic wildfire because of the steepness of its terrain,
(A SMUD contractor caused the first major conflagration in the Crystal Basin which
consumed 26,00 acres of virgin timber in the construction of Ice House reservoir-
1959). If you feel such activity would make Apple Hill a less desirable destination
for you and/or your family, please contact any or all of SMUD’s directors to register
your objection. They have researched two alternative sites for this installation.
We thank you for your consideration in this matter and for your support through the
years. We are looking forward to seeing and serving you.
Sincerely yours,
Phoebe
